Community Impact: What Is It?
Community impact is improving lives by mobilizing communities to create lasting changes in community conditions. While PCUW funded programs help make important, measurable improvements in people’s lives, community impact examines root causes of a problem and unifies the community in addressing the issue. It is the basis for United Way’s mission.
Community IMPACT Areas

Collaboration Is Key
Creating community impact is a collaborative effort. United Way is one of many players and sees its role primarily as a convener that brings together numerous resources throughout the community to address a critical issue. In addition to funding, resources can include time, talent, community research, agencies, public policy, and neighborhood associations. United Way works with community leaders from business, government, faith-based organizations, agencies, and other local groups in developing consensus around a community impact plan.
Person County United Way has announced a plan that redefines the organization's role and seeks to align financial, human, and other resources with the community's most pressing needs while maintaining core services beginning in 2009.
The move, which was preceded by two years of strategic planning by the PCUW Board of Directors, is consistent with efforts by United Ways across the country to shift their focus away from raising and distributing funds to improving people's lives by creating lasting changes in community conditions.
While we will continue to help area residents meet basic health and human services needs, United Way's traditional role as a fundraiser in the non-profit sector is just not as relevant today as it once was, and we need to adjust to the conditions that are changing around us. Person County United Way grew out of the Community Chest formed 40 years ago and for a long time was known as "one campaign for all" this approach had wide appeal, however, increasing needs for services and an influx of new non-profit organizations competing for donors' support have resulted in United Ways nationwide reshaping their efforts. Instead of just funding direct services, United Ways are taking on a multitude of roles by focusing on their communities' most pressing needs and convening a wide variety of partners to eliminate the root causes of problems.
All nonprofit agencies are invited to attend our Council of United Way Agencies Meetings each quarter. Person County United Way has a commitment to continually improve nonprofit that care about health and human services. We provide a quarterly forum to help nonprofits learn about different topics such as: writing grants, developing their boards, creating strategic plans, lowering overhead cost, improving newsletters, etc… All nonprofit organizations are invited to participate.
