Income & Financial Stability

United Way Helps Americans Achieve Financial Stability

As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education and currently, 40 million Americans are working in low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits.  For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way is here to help.

Our Goal

In 2018, United Way Worldwide is embarking on an ambitious 10-year plan to help 5 million people get better jobs.  An estimated 4,000 households in Person County are struggling to meet ends meet.   With your help, we believe that here locally we can make an impact by 2028 .  Join us at our 2018 Campaign Kick-off as we share with you some of the intiatives that are already underway.

Our Strategy

To address the obstacles that prevent hard working families from getting ahead financially, we are partnering with agencies who are engaging in activities and initiatives to help build the financial stability of families in our community.   United Way and RTI also launched the "Our Money Needs Calculator"  an online interactive toolkit to help chart a path to a more financially sound future.  The calculator uses information entered by the family along with data from the “Self-Sufficiency Standard for North Carolina 2017” to determine the costs of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and other essentials such as clothing, as well as taxes and tax credits. After viewing the income required to meet their basic needs, families are directed to financial assistance resources. “Let’s Talk Money: A Family Guide” provides tips and tools to help families review their current financial situation and set goals for the future. The “Economic Security Pathways Report” shares information on pathways for families to build long-term financial security.
